Junior Stars

The Junior Stars is one of our three pre-professional troupes. Junior Stars training includes comprehensive theatre education with an emphasis on ensemble work. Students will develop skills in acting, voice, dance, physical theatre, improv,   and audition technique. Junior Stars ensemble classes are Wednesdays from 4-5PM, and a virtual dance and music class of your choice is included in the tuition. In addition to group classes, students will receive 1 on 1 instruction in a supportive and fun learning environment. Junior Stars students  will have a live virtual showcase opportunity. The Junior Stars students are selected through invitation or audition. Due to the nature of our fall 2020 semester, students may apply from anywhere. Click here for more info.

Dream Team

 The Dream Team was created for advanced and dedicated performers in grades 6-9 who aspire to pursue a career in the performing arts.  Dream Team training includes comprehensive theatre education from Broadway and Professional Teaching Artists, with an emphasis on musical theatre, ensemble work, and audition technique. In addition to group classes, students will receive 1 on 1 instruction in a supportive and fun learning environment. Dream Team students will have a live virtual showcase opportunity. Dream Team ensemble classes are Sundays from 4-5:30PM EST over Zoom, and a virtual dance and music class of your choice is included in the tuition, as well as several masterclasses. The Dream Team students are selected through invitation or audition. Due to the nature of our fall 2020 semester, students may apply from anywhere. Click here​ for more info.

High School (HSPP)

The High School Pre-Professional Program (HSPP) is for performers who want to take their craft to the next level. By working closely with Broadway and Professional Teaching Artists, HSPP students will develop their acting, singing and dance skills through both classes and rehearsal. Classes will include Acting Technique for Theater/Film & Tv, Audition Prep, Ensemble Creation & Collaboration, Voice Speech & Performance, as well as various styles of classes in Singing and Dancing. HSPP ensemble classes are Sundays from 4-5:30PM EST over Zoom, and a virtual dance and music class of your choice is included in the tuition, as well as several masterclasses.  In addition to group classes, students will receive 1 on 1 instruction in a supportive and fun learning environment. HSPP students will have a live virtual showcase opportunity. Students in the DMR HSPP are selected by audition only. Due to the nature of our fall 2020 semester, students may apply from anywhere. Click here​ for more info.

Nancy Paulson 

Director, DMR Junior Stars

Nancy is entering her 4th year as Director of the Junior Stars troupe.

In addition to Junior Stars, Nancy has worked for four years as a music director for summer camps, and director for select DMR choir ensembles including the youth chorus for UVA’s production of Bernstein’s MASS. She is the Choir Director at The Village School: Middle School for Girls in Charlottesville where she has taught for over ten years and also teaches private voice lessons from her home studio.

Nancy is a frequent soloist at Westminster Presbyterian and has sung with multiple choral ensembles including The Kennedy Center’s Washington Chorale (formerly named The Paul Hill Chorale), Oratorio Society of Virginia, The Blacksburg Master Chorale, and the Kansas State Concert Choir. She studied voice with Dr. Jennifer Edwards (professor emeritus, KSU) and plays both piano and violin.

Passionate about education and working with young people, Nancy began her career working at the Congressional Youth Leadership Council in DC, and then as a student affairs professional at Indiana University, Virginia Tech and UVA. She feels fortunate to be able to spend this part of her career joining together her music and education backgrounds to help others discover the joy of singing and performing. Nancy holds a B.A. in Journalism and a M.S. in Education.

Kolby Kindle

Director, DMR Dream Team 

DMR is lucky to have worked with Kolby over the last few years as a Broadway guest artist on the Broadway Bound and Exploring Hamilton programs, and we are proud to announce that he will lead our Dream Team program in 2020.

An Oklahoma City native. Kolby just returned to the United States after opening with the original Australian company of Come From Away (Bob and Others). National / International Tours: Waitress (Ensemble u/s Joe and Cal), The Book of Mormon (Ensemble u/s Mafala and General), Sister Act (Curtis Jackson), Dreamgirls (Marty), Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Ensemble u/s Cogsworth). Regional credits include: Music Theatre of Wichita (Smokey Joe's Cafe, Crazy for You, Annie, Curtains), Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma (Chess, Jesus Christ Superstar), Westchester Broadway Theatre (Ragtime) and New Stage Theatre (Donkey in Shrek). Matthew Steffens

Director, DMR HSPP

Matt is known to the DMR family as the Director of our Broadway at the Paramount Series from 2016-2018 and we are thrilled to have him lead our High School Pre-Professional Program (HSPP)

 

THEATER: Broadway/Off Broadway:  Doctor Zhivago (Associate Choreographer); Queen of the Night (Drama Desk Award - Associate Choreographer / Resident Director), Superhero (Associate Choreographer), Pretty Hunger (Public Theater - Choreographer),  Bountiful (R.Evolucion Latina - Choreographer), BC BEAT (Choreographer), The Tempest (Pregones Theater - Choreographer). Regionally, he has directed and/or choreographed Joseph…, Violet, A Chorus Line, Guys & Dolls, 9 to 5, A Christmas Carol, Hairspray, The Pajama Game, The Legend of Georgia McBride. Theaters include The Guthrie Theater, PlayMakers Rep, Axelrod PAC, The Mountain Playhouse as well as internationally in China on the original Chinese musical Princess Butterfly. As a performer he appeared on Broadway in Promises, Promises, Women on the Verge and has danced, fought and flown his way through 17 operas at the Metropolitan Opera. TOURS: West Side Story,CONTACT, Beauty & the Beast. FILM/TV: The Last Five Years, Across the Universe, Black Box, Smash, Kennedy Center Awards - Chita Rivera, La Traviata, Pan Am (Assoc. Choreographer). CURRENTLY: This season, he can be seen dancing at The Metropolitan Opera in La Traviata, and will be serving as Associate Choreographer for the new musical The Visitor playing Off-Broadway at The Public Theater. This spring, Matt will be serving as the Associate Choreographer for the THE OUTSIDERS, which will make it’s pre-Broadway tryout in Chicago (The Goodman Theatre). An educator for the past 20 years, Matt spent three years working with the Playmakers Repertory Company Youth Conservatory.  In addition to his weekly dance classes at Broadway Dance Center, he continues his work as a theater educator with the next generation of theater makers through various workshops in NYC and across the country .
